The Zakat Fund of the Maldives has received MVR 98.6 million so far this year, marking the largest collection in its history, according to Islamic minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.
In a message to the media on Wednesday, Shaheem highlighted the significance of this achievement, attributing it to the establishment of a dedicated Zakat agency under the leadership of President Mohamed Muizzu.
"This remarkable milestone reflects the success of the government's efforts to ensure effective management and distribution of zakat," said Shaheem.
The minister also revealed the government’s goal of raising MVR 100 million annually for the Zakat Fund. He assured that the funds would be utilised to provide extensive support to those eligible for zakat, emphasising the administration's commitment to uplifting the community.
Beyond local contributions, the Zakat Fund has extended its reach internationally. The Maldives Zakat House, under the fund’s initiatives, has donated 6,000 cases of water to patients at Gaza’s Al Shifa and Al Hayat hospitals. In total, 50,000 cases of water have been distributed to the people of Gaza through collaborative efforts led by the Zakat House.
