A man arrested for robbing a woman on Alikilegefaanu Magu in Male has been remanded in custody for 15 days.
The suspect, identified as Hassan Isam, 30, admitted to the crime during the remand hearing on Saturday but stated that the stolen gold necklace is no longer in his possession.
The incident, which occurred on the 19th of this month, was captured on CCTV footage and circulated on social media. The video shows a man wearing a helmet stopping a motorcycle, confronting a woman, and attempting to rob her. While he succeeded in taking the gold necklace, his attempt to rob her bag was thwarted by her actions. The woman sought safety by entering a nearby house, and the suspect fled the area as others were alerted.
Isam was arrested shortly after and produced before the Criminal Court for an extension of his remand. According to the court order, Isam has a history of criminal offences. The order also noted that the circumstances suggest the use of violence during the incident.
The suspect has stated his willingness to cooperate with the investigating officer.
Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
