HRCM seeks charges against 2 police officers over custody suicide
Athhar, who was arrested on August 30 for threatening a woman with a knife and kidnapping her, died by suicide on September 2.
Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has recommended the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) prosecute two police officers following an investigation into the death of Adam Athhar.
Athhar, who was arrested on August 30 for threatening a woman with a knife and kidnapping her, died by suicide on September 2. He used part of his shorts and died while receiving treatment at a hospital.
HRCM spokesperson Ali Zajil Shaheed confirmed on Monday that two officers have been referred to the PGO for prosecution. Further details regarding the specific charges were not disclosed.
Athhar's case involved multiple hospital visits in the days leading up to his death:
-
Athhar was initially taken to the hospital on the day of his arrest after exhibiting symptoms of vomiting and fits.
-
He was released from the hospital and later re-arrested, with a court issuing a detention order pending trial.
-
The woman involved in the incident was treated at ADK Hospital for injuries sustained when police intervened during her rescue.
Criticism has been directed at the police for potential negligence in allowing Athhar to retain his shorts, which facilitated his suicide while in custody.
The PGO has not yet commented on whether charges will be filed against the two officers.
