Customs officers probed for MVR 400 million fraud, bribery

A group of Maldives Customs officers is under investigation for alleged involvement in circulating MVR 400 million through their accounts, linked to suspected fraud and bribery in import duty payments.

Sources indicate that the investigation, led by police, is focused on accusations of unjust enrichment, bribery, and abuse of office. As part of the investigation:

  • Police have confiscated the phones and other equipment of certain officers.

  • Around 20 officers are reportedly implicated, though investigations are currently concentrated on three to four individuals.

A police official stated that further details would be shared with the media in due course. However, no official statement has been issued by the police regarding the matter.

The issue has also been brought to the attention of the parliamentary 241 committee on security services, which oversees matters related to national security and law enforcement.
