Policeman injured from building glass sheet
The glass shattered on impact after hitting the top of a nearby pipeline.
A police officer was injured when a large glass sheet fell from the balcony of a building in front of Ghiyasuddin School on Ameenee Magu.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, leaving the policeman with a head injury, though no life-threatening wounds were reported.
According to a family member of the injured officer, the glass struck him on the head, resulting in a deep cut. The family member explained that the situation could have been much worse, as the glass might have struck him directly if it had not hit a nearby pipe first.
"This was a real death blow. Fortunately, the glass hit the pipe first. Otherwise, it would have hit him directly,” said his family member.
Photographs obtained by Atoll Times revealed that the glass covering the sixth-floor balcony was divided into three sections, with one section falling off completely. The glass shattered on impact after hitting the top of a nearby pipeline.
The injured policeman was transported to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for treatment and was later released after receiving medical attention. Though the injury was severe, it is understood that the officer is recovering.
The family representative also raised concerns about the safety standards of buildings in the city, suggesting that the incident is indicative of larger issues with building maintenance and structural integrity.
"This is a prime example of how unsafe some of the buildings in the city are," they noted.
In response to the incident, the police cordoned off the area, and investigations into the cause of the glass falling are ongoing. The authorities have yet to determine whether it was due to structural failure, poor maintenance, or another factor.
This incident adds to a growing list of dangerous occurrences involving falling objects from buildings in the capital. In December 2017, a seven-year-old Bangladeshi girl lost her life when a cement sack fell from a building under construction, highlighting the potential dangers posed by poorly maintained structures.
