Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday called on Israel to pay reparations to Palestine following the announcement of a ceasefire agreement after 15 months of conflict in Gaza.

In a statement shared on social media, President Muizzu expressed relief at the ceasefire and urged the international community to ensure its continuation. He emphasised the importance of enabling the displaced population to return home and ensuring access to humanitarian assistance.

"We are relieved to hear that a ceasefire deal has been reached after 15 months of genocidal war in Gaza," President Muizzu stated. "The Maldives expresses its profound appreciation to the countries that have facilitated this agreement."

President Muizzu further called for reparations, stating, "We call on Israel to pay reparations to Palestine."

He also urged the international community to extend immediate support for Palestine’s rebuilding efforts.

The complex ceasefire accord between Israel and militant group Hamas, which controls Gaza, emerged on Wednesday after months of mediation by Qatar, Egypt and the US and 15 months of bloodshed that devastated the coastal territory and inflamed the Middle East.

The deal outlines a six-week initial ceasefire with the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, where tens of thousands have been killed. Hostages taken by Hamas would be freed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Israeli troops invaded Gaza after Hamas-led gunmen burst into Israeli border-area communities on Oct. 7, 2023, killing 1,200 soldiers and civilians and abducting over 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.
