Parliament on Thursday approved the appointments of Mohamed Abdulla, a former Member of Parliament, and Aminath Saraahath Izzath to the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom).

The independent institutions committee evaluated the nominees submitted by the president to fill two vacant seats on Broadcom. The committee ranked the candidates based on their performance during the review process and presented the names in order of their marks for parliamentary approval.

Aminath Saraahath Izzath received 89% approval from the 68-member parliament. No members voted against her appointment.

Former journalist Shifza Mustafa, who worked with VTV, received 84% marks from the committee but failed to secure parliamentary approval, with 50 members voting against her nomination and 11 members in favor.

The third-highest-ranked candidate, Mohamed Abdulla, a former MP for Ihavandhoo constituency and senior activist of the Progressive National Congress (PNC), secured his appointment with 58 votes in favor and two against.

The president had initially nominated Ibrahim Muaz, a former presidential spokesperson under President Abdulla Yameen, alongside Mohamed Abdulla. However, Muaz did not receive sufficient marks from the committee to proceed to a parliamentary vote.

Aminath Saraahath, who received the highest marks in the committee’s review process, was also seventh on the overall list of nominees submitted for consideration.
