A man has been arrested but released in connection with the physical assault of a child with special needs at a school in Male’.
The incident, which occurred at a primary grade level, has sparked concern.
According to police, the man was arrested last Friday under a warrant and subsequently brought before the Criminal Court for a custody decision. The court released him with conditions.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry of Education confirmed the assault took place at a school in Male’, but did not disclose further details about the victim’s identity. The Ministry emphasized that any form of abuse against students, especially those with special needs, is completely unacceptable.
Dr Ismail Shafeeu, the Minister of Education, condemned the incident, stressing that the Ministry is committed to taking effective steps to address the situation.
"When such a case comes to the attention of the Ministry, responsible steps will be taken to ensure the safety of students and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future," he said.
The police, in their statement, reiterated their commitment to a thorough investigation.
