Health ministry on Tuesday announced that over 800 patients have been transported via air ambulance since the service was launched in the Maldives on March 1.

The service is operated using a Dash 8 aircraft from the national airline, Maldivian.

According to the ministry, 700 flights have been conducted, carrying 804 patients requiring urgent medical transportation.

The air ambulance service is a collaborative initiative involving Maldivian, the Ministry of Health, and NSP.

The air ambulance service operates as part of the Maldives Emergency Medical Service system, providing the following:

  • Transportation of patients to the nearest hospital for immediate care.

  • Availability of 15 trained health workers, including doctors, nurses, and emergency medical technicians, equipped with emergency medical equipment.

The government has also approved the transportation of patients to neighbouring Sri Lanka using the air ambulance. However, no patients have been transported abroad via the service as of now.
