In a move to address rising concerns about the high costs of tuition, the local island council of GA. Gadhdhoo has announced a ban on foreign teachers offering private lessons in the island.

This decision comes after a series of complaints from parents who felt that the prices charged by foreign tutors were excessively high.

The issue has been a point of contention for some time, with many parents expressing frustration over the fees, which ranged from MVR 500 to MVR 700 per student per session. These rates were seen by many as disproportionate.

Foreign teachers who continue to provide tuition services without proper authorisation will face potential consequences under both the Immigration Act and the Foreigners Employment Act. The statement from the council emphasised that such practices undermine the equitable provision of quality education on the island.

According to sources, the local council's views on the matter were divided. While a few councillors believed that charging MVR 500-700 per student was acceptable, the majority expressed concern over the impact these high prices were having on families. It was agreed that the practice of foreign teachers offering private tuition for such high fees would not only violate local regulations but also exacerbate the divide in access to quality education.

The council's announcement pointed out that the private tuition services provided by foreign teachers were operating outside the bounds of legal and educational guidelines.
