President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdullah Shahid, on Thursday declared that the opposition party is resolute in its mission to overthrow the current government.

Shahid's comments in a passionate speech delivered at Bondibaiy Park Thursday evening, come ahead of a major rally scheduled for the 31st of this month, where the MDP plans to intensify its opposition efforts.

Shahid accused the government of engaging in actions aimed at consolidating dictatorial power and systematically restricting the rights of the people. He emphasised that MDP will not be silenced in the face of what he described as a concerted effort by the government to curtail democratic freedoms.

"We are resolute. The more we do that, the more we will bring down this government," Shahid declared, signalling that the party's resistance will only grow stronger.

The MDP president criticised what he referred to as the government's use of "small rocks" to quell the opposition’s voice, alleging that it is using tactical manoeuvres to suppress public dissent. One such example, Shahid said, is the government's attempt to obstruct MDP's planned rally in Hulhumale. Despite not receiving approval from the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) for the event, Shahid stated the party would forge ahead with their plans.

"We have told the HDC that you should give us a date," Shahid explained.

Despite the looming obstacles, the MDP is determined to hold the rally in Hulhumale, regardless of the government's opposition.
