Construction of council buildings in 55 islands to begin by April
Malaysia’s Hextar Global has been awarded the contract to undertake the project.
The Ministry of Local Government has announced that construction of council office buildings in 55 islands will commence by April.
Malaysia’s Hextar Global has been awarded the contract to undertake the project, which was finalised in January with a two-year deadline. The project is valued at $36 million (MVR 555 million).
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office on Thursday, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar stated that a team from Hextar Global would arrive in the Maldives on 28 February. The project is expected to be operational by April.
The minister outlined the following details regarding the construction:
-
Approximately 39 council buildings will be built with two floors.
-
Only a few councils will require complete demolition and reconstruction.
-
The project is scheduled to be completed within two years.
Many councils currently operate in buildings with limited space. The construction of new office buildings for such councils is part of President Mohamed Muizzu’s commitments.
