The Ministry of Local Government has announced plans to send Eid decorations to 36 islands this year, with an estimated cost of MVR 28 million.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar stated that the government aims to celebrate Eid in all cities and islands. Last year, various locations were decorated with lights for the occasion.

The minister confirmed that the procurement process is being carried out in consultation with STELCO and the Ministry of Finance. Two islands from each atoll have been selected to receive the decorations, based on population size.

He noted that two islands, which received decorations last year, will not be included in this year’s distribution. The decorations are intended to enhance the Eid celebrations and create an environment where the Takbeer can be heard.

When asked about the cost, given the current economic conditions in the Maldives, Shareef stated that the initiative is intended to meet public expectations. He said the practice began when President Mohamed Muizzu was mayor, and demand has increased since then.

Shareef further stated:

  • The initiative is meant to enhance celebrations and reflect cultural and religious traditions.

  • The government’s priority is to express Islamic values through the decorations.

  • The decorations will also be used for other occasions in the islands.

He added that while 36 islands have been selected, there are additional islands requesting decorations, and the government considers this an important initiative at present.
