Housing Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib announced Thursday that 1,820 individuals have qualified for flats under the 'Gedhoruveriya' housing scheme -- a revision from the 8,660 individuals who were listed as eligible by the previous administration.

The final list of recipients is scheduled for release Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office, Muththalib stated that only applications from individuals who met the eligibility criteria were considered during the verification process.

"During this verification, applications from individuals who scored less than 75 points for three-bedroom flats, as per the list announced on 15 November 2023, were not reviewed. Similarly, applications scoring less than 73 points for two-bedroom flats were not reviewed," he said.

The minister clarified that no additional applications were considered, and only those meeting the required score thresholds were evaluated. Those who did not meet the requirements or had scores below the specified points were removed from the list.

The ongoing housing project consists of 4,000 units, with the following allocations:

  • 1,250 two-bedroom flats

  • 2,750 three-bedroom flats

The previously gazetted list of eligible candidates included:

  • 4,939 applicants for two-bedroom flats

  • 3,721 applicants for three-bedroom flats

The verification process was conducted through an online portal, ensuring that neither applicants nor officials could alter submitted documents or information.

"The verification process cross-checked the submitted documents against information available in government databases. Points were assigned based on the applicant’s information, which was then verified for accuracy," Muththalib stated.
