Ahmed Nareesh has resigned from his position as Deputy Mayor of Male and as a member of the Male City Council.
Nareesh announced his resignation by posting his letter to Mayor Adam Azim on Facebook on Wednesday. The letter did not provide a reason for his resignation but expressed gratitude to those who supported him during his tenure.
In his letter, Nareesh thanked:
-
The residents and the PPM-PNC supporters for electing him as the councillor for Maafannu Central Constituency.
-
The councillors who supported him in the Deputy Mayor election.
-
Former Mayor and current President Mohamed Muizzu for the lessons he learned while serving as Deputy Mayor.
-
Incumbent Mayor Adam Azim, from the opposition MDP, for his guidance.
-
The employees of the city council for their efforts in strengthening council services.
Nareesh was elected Deputy Mayor in a closely contested internal vote within the PPM. He was challenged by Baarah MP and PNC Vice President Ibrahim Shujau and Vilimale Councillor Nahla Ali. Nareesh secured the position with five votes, while Shujau and Nahla each received four votes. He was later confirmed as Deputy Mayor with the support of 12 out of 19 councillors.
