Elections Commission condemns remarks against president’s son
HRCM and the Ministry of Social and Family Development have also issued statements urging restraint in political rallies.
The Elections Commission (EC) on Thursday condemned remarks made by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist Mariyam Zubair regarding President Mohamed Muizzu’s son.
Mariyam, the mother of Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, linked the government's ban on vape products to the President’s son. The comments have drawn criticism from pro-government individuals on social media.
In a statement issued Wednesday evening, the EC stated that it condemns unsubstantiated remarks that could affect the dignity and well-being of children. The commission urged public figures to adhere to the provisions of the Children's Rights Protection Act when making statements.
The EC also referenced Article 45 of the Political Parties Act, calling for political discussions to remain within legal and ethical boundaries. It advised against comments that could incite anger or hatred, personal criticisms, and unverified claims.
“The commission will always welcome political activities within the limits of laws and regulations,” the statement said.
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the Ministry of Social and Family Development have also issued statements urging restraint in political rallies and demonstrations to protect the dignity of children.
