SC judges remain on indefinite suspension after a month
The JSC is investigating two cases related to judicial conduct involving Mahaz and Azmiralda.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) indefinitely suspended three Supreme Court judges on 26 February, marking one month to the indefinite suspension. One of the judges, Husnu Suood, resigned on 4 March, while Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir and Justice Dr Azmiralda Zahir remain under suspension.
The JSC is investigating two cases related to judicial conduct involving Mahaz and Azmiralda:
-
Allegations that Azmiralda and Mahaz influenced Criminal Court judges to prevent the arrest of Azmiralda’s husband, IGMH doctor Ismail Latheef.
-
The summoning of High Court Assistant Registrar Mohamed Haneef to the Supreme Court, allegedly in relation to misconduct involving a separate case.
Both judges have been presented before the JSC regarding these cases and have received the initial investigation report related to the alleged influence on a remand order.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is conducting a separate inquiry into the alleged judicial influence on the arrest warrant. Three Criminal Court judges have provided statements to the ACC, but Mahaz and Azmiralda have not been summoned.
In addition, the JSC has initiated a disciplinary investigation against lawyer Ibrahim Shameel for issuing public statements in defence of the two judges.
