Chief Justice Shaheed was appointed to the Supreme Court following the resignation of former Supreme Court Justice Husnu Suood. Suood resigned after accusing President Mohamed Muizzu of attempting to influence the Supreme Court.
Suood, along with Justices Mahaz Ali Zahir and Azmiralda Zahir, filed a complaint with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The judges were suspended shortly before a hearing on an interim injunction regarding a parliamentary amendment that allows party members to lose their seats in the House of Representatives.
