Former Immigration Controller Shamman Waheed has appealed his arrest at the High Court after being remanded in custody for allegedly receiving illegal benefits from foreigners.
Shamman was dismissed from his position over bribery allegations and was arrested last Friday night. The Criminal Court ordered his remand for 15 days on Saturday night.
According to the High Court registry, Shamman filed an appeal against the arrest warrant on Tuesday. The High Court has not yet decided whether to accept the appeal.
Police have alleged that:

Employees used their positional influence to search a residence where foreigners were staying and detained several individuals.
-
The foreigners were taken into immigration custody along with MVR 530,000.
-
A day later, under Shamman's orders, a foreigner was released in the middle of the night with cash.
-
Employees met the foreigner on the street and took the money to Shamman's residence.
-
A large amount of money and electronic equipment were seized from Shamman's residence.
Police have also seized the phone of Shamman's wife, Hidfa Faiz. Additionally, the passports of two individuals were confiscated, though police have not disclosed their identities.
