The Ministry of Heritage has decided to include the ADh. Maamigili Kandhili Mosque in the official list of heritage sites.
The ministry announced the decision in a statement Thursday, following discussions between Minister Adam Naseer and Maamigili Council President Imad Farooq.
A source from Maamigili stated that the mosque is estimated to be between 600 and 700 years old. According to the source, the mosque was constructed without cement, with stones pressed into stone cuttings. The mosque’s well was built using the same method.
The structure was originally sheltered by an ancient wooden roof, which was later replaced with new carpentry. A lantern-like object from the mosque was taken to Malé and placed in the national museum.
The source added that the Kandhili Mosque is the only remaining ancient mosque in Maamigili. The old Ma Mosque was demolished, and its stones were used for the construction of Maamigili School. The mosque was removed as it was located on top of a cemetery.
