President Mohamed Muizzu appointed Supreme Court Justice Hussain Shaheedh as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The appointment ceremony was held at the President’s Office Monday morning.

During the ceremony, the president presented the appointment letter to Shaheedh.

Shaheedh signed his appointment letter upon being sworn in.

Prior to his appointment, Shaheedh took his oath in the presence of the president, with Supreme Court Justice Dr Mohamed Ibrahim administering the oath. Following the ceremony, he signed the oath of office as well.

Shaheedh, a seasoned legal professional, has also served as the High Court's Chief Judge and Judge at the Criminal Court. He holds a Master of Islamic Judicial Science, Sharia Policy, and Jurisprudence and Law, LLB.

The seat of a Supreme Court judge on JSC became vacant following the resignation of Judge Husnu Suood.

Shaheed was approved by parliament to fill the vacancy left by Suood’s resignation. The Supreme Court confirmed on 26th March that Shaheed would replace Suood on the JSC. Suood resigned from his position on 4th March.

The JSC is a constitutional body responsible for regulating the judiciary, including the appointment, dismissal, and hearing of judges. The current members of the commission are:

  • Hussain Riza Adam (Chairman of the Commission)

  • High Court Judge Mohamed Niyaz (Vice-President of the Commission)

  • Parliament speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla

  • Civil Court Judge Farhad Rasheed (Member representing lower court judges)

  • Dr Aminath Kulsoom (Member of Parliament representing the public)

  • Civil Service Commission (CSC) President Mohamed Naseeh

  • Yazmeed Mohamed (Member nominated by the President)

  • Attorney General Ahmed Usham

  • Lawyer Ali Abdul Latheef (Elected from among lawyers, Member representing the lawyers)

Suood resigned following allegations of interference by President Mohamed Muizzu in Supreme Court matters.

In addition to Suood, Justices Mahaz Ali Zahir and Azmiralda Zahir have been suspended.

The suspension occurred as the court was set to hear a case regarding the suspension of new provisions in the constitution that could lead to the loss of a parliamentary seat in the event of party expulsion.
