Funeral for missing burnt boat crew member delayed
Mushfiq was known in his community as someone who led prayers and recited the Qur’an.
The funeral of Ali Mushfiq Mohamed Shareef, who went missing after the Holhudhoo Boat caught fire and sank earlier this month, will be held following a court declaration of death.
Mushfiq, 25, from L. Maavah, was reported missing on the night of 2 April. He was the only person unaccounted for from the cargo vessel Holhudhoo Boat, which was travelling from Thaa Atoll to Malé with 18 people on board when it caught fire and sank.
Despite search efforts, Mushfiq had not been located for over a week. The family initially planned to hold the funeral following Friday prayers.
However, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed stated in a Facebook post that it was not appropriate to proceed with the funeral until a court had issued a declaration confirming the death.
In a post made after Friday prayers, Shaheem said he had discussed the matter with Mushfiq’s family. He noted that, in accordance with Islamic Shariah, the funeral would be arranged after the court confirmation, and he expressed intent to hold the funeral prayer at the Islamic Centre next Friday.
