The owner of two oil transport boats that caught fire off the coast of Th. Vilufushi on Tuesday is receiving treatment on a ventilator at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), according to hospital officials.
The 61-year-old man was injured in the incident along with a foreign crew member. IGMH media officer Hawwa Afeefa confirmed Sunday that the Maldivian man is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and remains on a ventilator.
The fire broke out when one of the boats caught fire while petrol was being pumped. The second vessel caught fire shortly after, as the flames spread from the first.
Both boats involved in the incident were owned by the same individual and were used to transport oil. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
