Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Thursday decided to hand over the administration of the High Court to Justice Hussain Shaheed following the retirement of chief judge Hathif Hilmy.

Hathif, who took over as chief justice of the High Court two years ago, is yet to reveal the reason for his retirement. He took over following the resignation of former chief justice Shujau Usman.

According to a brief statement issued by the JSC, Hathif stepped down from his post on Wednesday with dignity as per the existing procedure. No further details were given.

Shaheed, who was given temporary charge of running the High Court, became a judge of the high court on 24 July 2018. Prior to that, he was at the Criminal Court.

JSC started investigating Shaheed’s disciplinary case in 2019. No further details of the case have been disclosed, nor any further developments on it.

With Hathif's retirement, four high court judges have resigned this year. The judges who resigned earlier are:

  • Ali Sameer – currently working at the Prosecutor General's (PG) office

  • Abdul Rauf Ibrahim resigned after JSC filed a petition in parliament seeking his dismissal

  • Shuaib Hussain Zakariya resigned due to health reasons

Justice Abdulla Hameed was also removed this year. Hameed was sacked although a parliamentary judiciary committee found that JSC had committed procedural lapses in a case.
