The Ministry of Transport has amended the rules on road vehicle driving licences to allow individuals over the age of 60 to obtain a special licence for operating specific types of vehicles.

Published on Sunday, the new rules enable eligible individuals to receive this special licence without undergoing a standard driving test. Instead, applicants must complete a four-hour training programme focused on traffic regulations.

The special licence applies to the following vehicle categories:

  • Motorcycles below 60cc

  • Auto cycles

  • Island-type auto cycles

There are restrictions on the use of this licence:

  • Holders are permitted to operate vehicles only within the island where the licence is issued.

  • Driving is allowed only on roads with speed limits below 30 km/h.

  • Use of the licence on highways or bridges is prohibited.

The licence will be valid for 10 years from the date of issue. Renewal will require completion of the initial training programme.

Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen stated that the new policy does not affect the ability of individuals aged over 18, including those over 60, to apply for standard vehicle licences through the regular examination process.
