Police have initiated an internal review into the incident in which Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, 21, fell from a window of the ninth floor of H. Fentenoige last Thursday night.

Speaking at a press conference Thursday, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau said the review is being carried out to determine whether police followed established procedures in the handling of the case.

A three-member committee has been formed to conduct the review. The committee is led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen.

“If we have overlooked any aspect during the investigation, this team has been appointed to assess the case from a different perspective,” said Commissioner Shujau.

Assistant Commissioner Naveen stated that he personally visited the scene of the incident to ensure that all necessary procedures were being followed and to identify any possible areas that had not been adequately addressed.

The committee is also examining the floor and stairwell window from which Yumnu is said to have fallen, and is reviewing all evidence in collaboration with the Major Crime Investigation Department.

According to Naveen, a crime scene manager has been assigned to oversee the stairwell and rooftop of the adjacent warehouse, which have been classified as part of the crime scene. Police are also considering concerns raised on social media.

Police presented a drawing at the press conference, illustrating the layout of the scene. The window from which Yumnu fell is located in the stairwell of the ninth floor, approximately 89 feet above ground level.

The window dimensions were stated as 1 foot 10.5 inches in length and 1 foot 6.5 inches in width. The distance between the window and the floor was noted as four feet 10 inches.

Further developments in the case were also shared:

  • Raud Ahmed Zilal, who was with Yumnu at the time of the incident, has been issued a travel ban.

  • A court order for his arrest has been requested Thursday.

  • Seven others were with the pair prior to the incident. The passports of these individuals have been seized.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
