Deputy commissioner Naween appointed acting police chief
Shujau submitted his resignation letter to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who accepted it.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikry was initially appointed as Acting Commissioner of Police Saturday but was replaced an hour later by Deputy Commissioner Ismail Naween.
The post became vacant following the resignation of Ali Shujau, who stepped down amid public concern over the investigation into the fall of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed from the ninth floor of a building in Malé. Shujau submitted his resignation letter to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who accepted it.
Home Minister Ali Ihsan initially announced the appointment of Deputy Commissioner Farhad Fikry as Acting Commissioner. However, the decision was reversed shortly after the announcement.
Home Minister Ihsan stated that the change was made due to the ongoing investigation into the fall of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed. He said the police institution’s immediate priority was the investigation, which Deputy Commissioner Ismail Naween is leading.
"Deputy Commissioner Ismail Naween will assume the role temporarily until a permanent appointment is made," Ihsan stated in a post on X.
