The Parliament on Tuesday approved the appointment of state media presenter Moosa Rilwan to the Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom), following the resignation of former Vice President Ahmed Fazeen.

Rilwan was selected despite receiving the fourth-highest score in the evaluation conducted by the Independent Institutions Committee. The committee reviewed the applications of 10 candidates and shortlisted five who received over 75% in the assessment.

The scores were as follows:

  • 1-

    Zeena Zahir – 85%

  • 2-

    Shimla Ahmed – 83%

  • 3-

    Aminath Shiyana – 80%

  • 4-

    Moosa Rilwan – 81%

  • 5-

    Zamath Ahmed Waheed – 78%

In Tuesday's parliamentary session, the committee initially proposed a vote on the candidates in the order of their scores, beginning with Zeena Zahir, followed by Shiyana and Shimla. However, more than 50 members voted against each of the top three candidates, resulting in their rejection.

Rilwan was subsequently put to a vote and received 70 votes in favour, with no votes against. His appointment was thereby confirmed by Parliament.

Rilwan has worked for the state broadcaster, Public Service Media (PSM), primarily as a producer and television presenter.

The names of six candidates for the vacant commission seat had been submitted to Parliament on the previous day. The Independent Institutions Committee carried out the evaluation and recommended the candidates based on their assessments.
