Dr Vitaly Lyubimov, the first foreign national appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), has filed a case with the Employment Tribunal alleging that he was dismissed without notice.

Dr Lyubimov was removed from his position in March 2023, three months after his appointment as Managing Director of the state-owned enterprise. The complaint was submitted to the tribunal on 17 March 2023.

According to the claim, Dr Lyubimov was terminated without the three-month notice period stipulated in his employment agreement. He has requested compensation amounting to three months’ salary, which he has calculated as USD 42,000 (approximately MVR 647,640).

MIFCO has contested the tribunal’s jurisdiction to hear the case. However, the tribunal has decided to proceed with the hearing.

Separately, Noel Grega Patterson-Jones, who resigned as Managing Director and CEO of the Development Bank of Maldives (DBM) in March, also submitted a case to the Employment Tribunal, alleging non-payment of salary. The case was later dismissed due to the absence of representation.

DBM stated that Patterson-Jones was paid for the days he worked.
