The State Electric Company (STELCO) has confirmed that electricity has been restored to Malé and Hulhumalé following a six-hour power outage caused by a failure in the interconnection grid.

The outage began at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday and was resolved later the same day. STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy stated on social media that the issue with the interconnection grid had been addressed and service restored to both islands.

Fahmy extended thanks to STELCO employees and others involved in the restoration efforts and noted that the company would take all necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. He also apologised for the disruption caused to the public.

The exact cause of the outage is still under investigation. Fahmy said that once the cause is identified, the information will be made public.

STELCO said engineers are working to determine the reason for the disruption. No damage to the grid has been reported so far.

The President has ordered an official investigation into the incident.
