New Commissioner of Police, Ismail Naveen, has expressed confidence in the electronic tagging system used to monitor individuals released from custody pending trial.
In an interview with Dhauru on Tuesday, Commissioner Naveen said the tagging system is supported by a monitoring centre that operates around the clock.
“The system is designed to monitor the activities of tagged individuals, maintain logs, and generate electronic reports when conditions are violated,” he said.
The release of tagged individuals is initially set for 100 days. Commissioner Naveen said adjustments to the system may be made based on observations during this period.
“We are confident about the integrity of this tag,” he said, adding that the police are able to monitor and ensure that released individuals do not pose a threat to the public.
Since the implementation of the programme on 28th of last month, nine individuals have been tagged. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office:
-
121 people have applied for release
-
20 have been remanded in custody
-
92 are under police risk assessment
Commissioner Naveen acknowledged that the system may face challenges as the number of tagged individuals increases. He said any issues would be addressed in coordination with the relevant institutions.
He also stated that certain categories of individuals have requested not to be released under the tagging scheme. These include individuals accused of:
-
Large-scale drug trafficking
-
Involvement in terrorism
-
Murder
-
Sexual offences against children
“We are advising the Prosecutor General not to release such persons,” Naveen said.
