Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu has stated that the government aims to make A-Level the standard school-leaving qualification for all students in the Maldives by the end of the current presidential term.

The minister made the remarks at the ‘Aruthaveringe Inaam 2024’ ceremony, held at the Social Centre to recognise the top ten students in O-Level and A-Level examinations for 2022 and 2023.

Dr Shafeeu outlined two key decisions taken last year to increase A-Level participation:

  • A-Level classes were introduced in 23 schools across the atolls.

  • Students who passed two subjects were allowed to continue with A-Level studies.

As a result of these measures, there has been an increase in both the number of students enrolling in A-Level and those passing the examinations. According to Dr Shafeeu:

  • A 77% increase was recorded in the number of students studying A-Level in government schools.

  • Across all schools, including private institutions, A-Level participation increased by 38%.

  • An additional 106 students passed A-Level in the last academic year compared to the year before.

The minister noted that there is further capacity to increase enrolment at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) in Malé and in other regions, including Hulhumale. He added that efforts will be made to increase A-Level enrolment in Malé next year.

“We will continue to work to provide A-Level opportunities to as many students as possible. By the end of these five years, A-Level will be the school-leaving stage in the Maldives,” Dr Shafeeu said.
