No deal made for Nasheed’s return to MDP, Fayyaz says
Fayyaz acknowledged that the departure of Nasheed and his allies to form the Democrats had weakened the MDP.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed rejoined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) without any agreement for a position or specific arrangement, according to MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail.
Nasheed, who had previously left the party following internal disagreements, formally rejoined on Monday. His return followed discussions with Fayyaz, prompting speculation that a deal had been made between the two.
At a press conference held at the MDP office on Wednesday, Fayyaz dismissed claims that Nasheed’s return was conditional.
“The main reason President Nasheed and his associates returned is due to concerns over the current direction of the country. Many believe that reversing that course is only possible if MDP and the Democrats work together,” Fayyaz said. “Saving the country is the primary objective. President Nasheed did not return under a deal.”
Fayyaz acknowledged that the departure of Nasheed and his allies to form the Democrats had weakened the MDP.
“It’s the kind of challenge you face when part of your base leaves. Even when I became chairperson, I never considered leaving the party,” he said.
Fayyaz confirmed that there have been no discussions on granting Nasheed an official position within the party. However, he said Nasheed’s experience and popularity among members would be valuable in shaping the party’s direction.
“We will continue to seek his advice and input in our work, but there is no indication that he will take up a formal role within the party,” he said. “What may happen in the future is unknown.”
Nasheed currently serves as Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF).
He has long supported a shift to a parliamentary system of governance and previously advocated for a public referendum on the matter. Asked whether Nasheed's return was connected to support for a potential candidacy in the party’s presidential primary, Fayyaz denied any such understanding.
“President Nasheed joined the party without any such condition. He did not request support nor did he offer it for any individual,” Fayyaz said.
He added that there had been no discussions within the party regarding support for any particular candidate in future presidential primaries.
