The Maldives Police Service has launched a road safety and security awareness campaign in Hulhumale, following a fatal road accident earlier this week.
The campaign began on Wednesday, with activities carried out in Phase 1 of Hulhumale on the first day and Phase 2 on the second. According to police, the operation will continue throughout the year.
Officers were stationed along roads during peak morning hours, when people were travelling to work and school. They carried boards with messages urging road users to remain cautious. As part of the campaign, motorcycles and other objects were placed on the road to represent accident scenes and raise awareness of the potential consequences of unsafe road use.
Police said the campaign aims to remind the public of the importance of safety for all road users. Officers are working in teams during the operation and are engaging with the public by:
-
Describing accident scenes to highlight the risks of careless driving
-
Encouraging drivers to consider the safety of others
-
Emphasising the importance of valuing life above speed or convenience
-
Using speakers to deliver messages that urge motorists to slow down
The campaign follows a fatal accident that occurred in Male on Tuesday. A 17-year-old boy died when a speeding motorcycle collided with a pickup truck near the Maafannu bus station. The incident has prompted increased calls for road safety enforcement and awareness.
