Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Asif has been dismissed from his position following an internal investigation into allegations of corruption.
Asif, who also served as President of the Maldives Correctional Service’s Prisons Club, was suspended on 7 November last year. He was accused of depositing more than MVR 200,000 from the club’s funds into his personal account.
The Maldives Correctional Service confirmed his dismissal on Wednesday, following nearly eight months of paid suspension. No additional details were provided regarding the decision or findings of the investigation.
The case first came to light in August 2023 when 35 officers from the Prisons Club submitted a petition to Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer, calling for an inquiry into the matter. In response, Zareer confirmed that an investigation was underway.
Records indicate that Asif made two transactions amounting to MVR 70,000 into the club’s account. The remaining balance and further financial discrepancies have not been publicly disclosed.
Some staff members had previously raised concerns over delays in concluding the investigation.
