Bodies of 2 inmates sent to India for post-mortem
The deceased were identified as Ibrahim Suhail, 53, Dhaftharu No. 439, and Hassan Niyaz, 45, of Diggaagasdhoshuge, S. Hithadhoo.
The bodies of two inmates who died while serving sentences at Hulhumalé Prison have been sent to India for post-mortem examinations, police said on Thursday.
According to the Maldives Police Service, both men died on 2 February. The deceased were identified as Ibrahim Suhail, 53, Dhaftharu No. 439, and Hassan Niyaz, 45, of Diggaagasdhoshuge, S. Hithadhoo.
Police had earlier stated that post-mortem examinations would be conducted. When contacted on Thursday, a police spokesperson confirmed that the bodies were transferred to India early Wednesday.
The Maldives Correctional Service previously said Ibrahim Suhail died after being admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for one week. Corrections said he died at 9:05 a.m. while receiving treatment for pneumonia.
Hassan Niyaz died at 2:05 p.m. on the same day. Corrections said he experienced a medical emergency and was taken to hospital for treatment. Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the nature of the emergency.
Police sources said Hassan Niyaz was transported to hospital after losing consciousness in a prison toilet.
Images circulating on social media show injuries on Hassan Niyaz. In a written response, the Correctional Service said no prisoner is subjected to torture within the prison system and that such matters are treated seriously.
Investigations into the deaths are ongoing.
