Former President Mohamed Nasheed and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman Fayyaz Ismail have begun a joint campaign ahead of the local council elections scheduled for next year.

The two leaders, with Nasheed returning to the MDP last month, are campaigning together amid internal divisions within the party. Their first campaign event as a team was held on Tuesday night. The event was not attended by supporters of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

A participant of the meeting, held at the OTP restaurant in Malé, said the gathering was organised to prepare for the upcoming local council elections. Discussions reportedly included campaign strategies and planning for the elections.

In a video clip shared on social media, Fayyaz Ismail said, "To find the country, the party, and our society, we must all say the same thing together."

Former MDP Chairperson and former Democrats President Hassan Latheef, who also served as MP for Henveiru West in the previous parliament, shared the video and commented on X: “Unlike other political parties, MDP will win the election with policies that will benefit the people and campaigns full of voice, colour and enthusiasm. And that’s what Nasheed says, too.”

“I saw that Chairman Fayyaz has started the work very well,” Latheef added.

On 23rd of last month, during a rally marking his return to the MDP, Nasheed stated that the current government would receive no more than 20% of the vote in the upcoming council elections.
