The governments of Japan and the Maldives signed an Exchange of Notes on Saturday to formalise Japan’s assistance for the renovation of the seawall in Malé.
The signing ceremony was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldives. Parliamentary Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Iquino Akiko, who is also the Special Representative of the Prime Minister of Japan, signed on behalf of the Japanese government.
Under the agreement, Japan will provide US$10.5 million for the renovation and reconstruction of the seawall infrastructure around Malé.
During his remarks at the ceremony, Minister Khaleel highlighted the significance of the seawall in the city’s protection. He said the structure serves not only as a coastal defence but also as a symbol of the longstanding relationship between the Maldives and Japan.
He noted the role of the seawall in mitigating damage during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, saying its presence helped reduce the impact on Malé.
Minister Khaleel reaffirmed the Maldives' support for an open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region and expressed gratitude to Japan for its continued cooperation at regional and international levels.
