President Mohamed Muizzu has called for the inclusion of the death penalty in a bill currently under parliamentary debate concerning drug-related offences.
The government had submitted the bill to parliament in December with provisions to tighten penalties for certain drug offences, including the imposition of heavier fines. However, the current version of the bill does not include capital punishment.
In a post on X on Wednesday, President Muizzu stated that he had instructed the relevant authorities to propose amendments to the bill to introduce the death penalty and other severe penalties for those convicted of drug trafficking. He noted that similar measures are in place in other countries.
