Rasheed Carpentry and Construction (RCC) has been awarded the contract to construct council office buildings in 55 islands on a contractor-finance basis.

The project, valued at USD 36 million (MVR 555 million), was initially awarded to Malaysia’s Hextar Global in January this year but the contract was terminated in July.

The Ministry of Local Government announced on Thursday that the agreement had been signed with RCC. The ministry did not disclose the specific financial terms under which the project has now been awarded.

According to the ministry:

  • The project will commence this month.

  • Construction will be completed within one year.

  • Councils will be responsible for procuring furniture and building fences.

The earlier agreement with Hextar Global was cancelled after the company refused to accept changes proposed by island councils. Local Government Minister Adam Shareef previously said no compensation was required for the termination.

“The proposals of the companies that expressed interest in constructing the council buildings were evaluated, and the work has now been awarded to a Maldivian company,” Minister Shareef said.
