Rasheed Carpentry and Construction (RCC) has been awarded the contract to construct council office buildings in 55 islands at a cost of MVR 631 million, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef confirmed on Thursday.
The ministry had announced the award of the project earlier this week but did not disclose the value. Speaking to Atoll Times, Minister Shareef said RCC was selected as the lowest bidder among four companies.
“RCC has been awarded the contract for MVR 631 million to build furniture and walls for the offices. The Economic Council (EC) decided to award the project as RCC was the lowest bidder,” he said.
He added that under the Finance Rules, which were amended in December 2023, certain projects can be processed without open bidding. “We submitted to the EC to proceed with the lowest bidder out of the four companies. After further discussions with RCC, we resubmitted to the EC, which is allowed by the Finance Rules,” he explained.
The ministry said the project will begin this month and be completed within one year.
The project, estimated at USD 36 million (MVR 555 million), was initially awarded to Malaysia’s Hextar Global in January. However, the agreement was cancelled in July without work starting. At the time, the ministry said the award to Hextar Global had also been made with EC approval.
