The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on Friday announced plans to bring in three additional dredgers in October to continue reclamation work at Hulhumalé Phase 3, Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Falhu and Uthuru Thila Falhu.
The government is pursuing large-scale dredging in the Malé region to address housing shortages. These projects include initiatives launched under the previous administration as well as new ones introduced by the current government.
Progress on some projects has faced delays, leading to complaints about work interruptions and schedules not being met.
In a statement released on Friday, the HDC said the deployment of the new dredgers is intended to accelerate land reclamation. The equipment consists of two hopper dredgers with a capacity of 45,000 tonnes and one hopper dredger with a capacity of 11,000 tonnes.
The HDC said it is working with relevant authorities to identify challenges and take measures to ensure continuity of the dredging works.
