The Elections Commission has decided to dissolve the Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD), a party founded by former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.
Under the Political Parties Act, a political party must maintain at least 3,000 members. If the membership falls below that threshold, the Commission is required to give the party three months to meet the requirement.
According to a notice published in the Government Gazette, the MTD failed to reach the required membership during the given period.
The Commission also stated that any debts owed by the MTD should be submitted to the party by 31 August.
In 2022, the Elections Commission had also issued a warning to the MTD over low membership. The party subsequently met the required number of members at that time.
