Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced he will be at the forefront of the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) upcoming protests in Malé, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, 3 October.
The MDP National Assembly approved the resolution for a series of demonstrations during an emergency meeting held on Monday evening. The resolution, introduced by Manadhoo constituency president Mohamed Thorig and supported by Hoarafushi constituency president Ahmed Saleem, calls for continuous protests until, in the party’s words, “the government is put on the right track.”
Speaking in support of the resolution, Solih said the MDP has a duty to hold the government accountable.
He criticised rising commodity prices and said the government had failed to provide adequate explanations. He also expressed concern over the proposed media regulation bill, describing it as an attempt to restrict media freedom.
“The MDP should take the lead in holding the government accountable. I ask all party members not to back down and move forward in accordance with the resolution just submitted,” Solih said.
Party President Abdulla Shahid also supported the resolution, alleging that state resources, constitutional powers, and public trust had been misused.
Shahid said Parliament, the judiciary, local councils, and the media had all been undermined, and accused the government of mismanaging housing projects and spending on undisclosed drone purchases.
“The MDP will always take the initiative and do whatever we can to get this country back on track. We will prove it on 3 October,” Shahid told members.
The resolution was passed unanimously by members present, with both Solih and Shahid confirming their participation in the protests.
