Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday thanked Fayyaz Ismail for his work as Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), following Fayyaz’s resignation from the post on Sunday.
In a post on X, Solih said he appreciated Fayyaz’s efforts in leading the party during periods when it served both as the ruling party and later as the opposition.
Solih wrote that Fayyaz had worked continuously to manage the party’s affairs, often under difficult circumstances, and that party members would recognise his contributions.
“I wish you good days ahead. With the help of Allah, I will continue to give full support to the newly elected chairperson. I always wish the MDP prosperity,” Solih said.
In a detailed letter sent to members of the MDP National Assembly on Sunday, Fayyaz said he had an interest in contesting the 2028 presidential election on the party ticket. He noted that other members had also shown interest, although none had made official announcements. He said this situation had created challenges for the party’s internal work.
Fayyaz stated that the party had carried out many efforts as an opposition party over the past two years, but internal divisions were causing unrest among members and affecting the party’s activities.
