The Parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee held a closed meeting on Tuesday to review the government-proposed bill on public referendums.
The session, which began at 9 a.m., was scheduled to examine the draft legislation introduced by the government.
Committee Vice-Chairman, Kela MP Abdulla Shareef, proposed that the meeting be conducted in private. The motion was seconded by Fuvahmulah Central MP Ibrahim Hussain and passed with majority support.
The bill, presented by the government’s parliamentary group leader, Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falaah, outlines circumstances under which a public referendum may be held. These include:

Amendments to constitutional articles relating to fundamental rights

Matters of national importance or issues directly affecting the people

Changes to the age requirement for Parliament members, the presidential term, or the method of electing the President

Approval of bills already passed by Parliament

Alterations to the territory of the Maldives
The committee will continue deliberations on the bill under confidentiality rules.
