Five members of Parliament have not submitted their financial statements for the past year, according to an announcement made by Parliament on Friday.
The deadline for MPs to file their financial statements expired on Thursday. A total of 88 members submitted their statements, which are now published on the Parliament’s website, Senior Parliamentary Media and Communications Officer Maan Assad confirmed.
According to the Parliament’s website, the five members who have not submitted their financial statements are:
-
Ahmed Zameer, MP for Machchangolhi Central (PNC)
-
Mohamed Nazim, MP for Maafannu North (MNP)
-
Mohamed Musthafa Ibrahim, MP for Maafannu West (PNC)
-
Mohamed Shamin Habeeb, MP for Kurendhoo (PNC)
-
Ismail Nizar, MP for Feydhoo North (PNC)
Current parliamentary rules do not require MPs to disclose their financial situation upon taking office. As a result, there is no mechanism to compare members’ wealth at the time of election with their financial growth during their tenure. Transparency International and other civil society organisations have raised concerns about the lack of accountability and oversight.
