The state has spent MVR 18.9 million on health insurance for former members of parliament over the past decade, according to information released on Wednesday.

The figures were obtained by social media personality Jubran Shareef under the Access to Information Act. Former MPs are entitled to MVR 24,000 per month in health insurance. Annual expenditure since 2014 has been:

  • 2014: MVR 562,500

  • 2015: MVR 562,500

  • 2016: MVR 565,000

  • 2017: MVR 1,056,000

  • 2018: MVR 1,056,000

  • 2019: MVR 2,328,000

  • 2020: MVR 2,328,000

  • 2021: MVR 2,280,000

  • 2022: MVR 2,280,000

  • 2023 – May 2024: MVR 2,280,000

  • May 2024 – May 2025: MVR 3,624,000

The data shows that spending has increased over the years as the number of former MPs eligible for health insurance has grown.
