The government has decided to allocate a fixed percentage of state revenue as a block grant to the judiciary in order to ensure its financial independence, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced on Thursday.
The decision was taken at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting. In a post on X, the President said that financial independence was essential for the judiciary to function independently.
He said the government is working to provide financial autonomy to the judiciary, allowing it to manage expenditure within an agreed framework. The new allocation will exceed the budget ceilings previously set for the judiciary.
According to the President, legal, technical, and systemic changes have been initiated to implement the reform. The block grant will be included in next year’s state budget.
