The Hulhumalé Magistrate’s Court has extended the seizure of two apartments linked to former Football Association of Maldives (FAM) president Bassam Adheel Jaleel for another year.
The two penthouses, located at Amin Avenue, were first seized in September 2023 following a court order. The initial order expired on Sunday, leading to the extension for a further year.
The court order was previously appealed at the High Court. The High Court Registrar declined to register the case, after which Bassam requested a review by the High Court judges. A three-judge bench, by majority, ruled that the case should be reviewed and referred back to the lower court.
According to the police, Amin Construction used MVR equivalent to $1 million from FAM funds to purchase the two properties. Investigators stated that Amin did not pay the money in Maldivian currency to FAM but prepared false documents to show that the payment had been made.
The $1 million was allegedly taken from a $1.9 million COVID-19 relief loan provided by FIFA to support clubs during the financial crisis.
The case has been filed against Amin Construction, Bassam, and former FAM officials. One of the trials against Bassam has concluded.
